At some point, most of us will have a friend or loved one who is facing a hospital stay. Hospitalization can be scary and is typically uncomfortable for everyone involved. Patients are stuck in bed, wearing terrible gowns, getting zero rest, and eating bad food … Let’s look at some ways you can make a hospital stay a little easier for the one you love.
First of all, visit. Hospital stays can be lonely and the nights can be long unless one has company. Whenever possible, spend some time at the hospital simply talking to or sitting with your loved one. He or she will be appreciative of your efforts and thankful for your time.
When at all possible, laugh. There's quite a bit of truth in the old adage, “laughter is the best medicine.” Scientific research indicates that spending time in laughter is not only good for the spirit, but is also good for the body. This is due in part to the fact that the mind has such a powerful influence over our physical well-being. If we can maintain an elevated emotional state, we can speed the healing process.
Perhaps one of the best ways to improve a loved one's hospital stay is to provide them with something to eat that doesn't have Jell-O in it! Most people indicate that one of the most depressing things about staying in the hospital is the food. While the preparation of the food is incredibly healthy, it tastes terrible. Countless comedians have written jokes about hospital food. And what's worse is the fact that the hospital staff members know the food is bad and continue to prepare it that way anyway!
To combat the issue of bad food, consider bringing your ill loved one a gourmet gift basket. Gourmet gift baskets can contain a wide variety of gourmet food items, food preparation techniques and tools, and a host of other unique items that may help pass the time and please the taste buds. You may also consider including gourmet food items that are open-and-eat, no preparation required.
Remember, however, it is important to check with your loved one's physician or nurse before bringing any outside food into the hospital. Some patients are put on restrictive diet for health purposes. But if your loved one is allowed to have outside food -- there's no better way to brighten their day than to provide them with a gourmet food gift basket!
